The Shrine of Ste Anne d'Auray (at 15 minutes distance)
The history of Sainte-Anne d'Auray begins in the 17th century, as Saint Anne, mother of Mary, appears in front of Yves Nicolazic in a village of peasants. At that time Saint Anne d'Auray was called Ker Anna, which means in the village of Anne, in Breton language.Bij her appearance, she asked him to rebuild the chapel which was dedicated to her in the sixth century. The news spread quickly throughout Bretagne and the pilgrims began an immediate trip to Saint Anne d'Auray, where the largest pilgrimage in the region emerged. In the nineteenth century, the chapel became too small to welcome all the pilgrims. That is the reason why the basilica was built between 1865 and 1872 by architect Desperthes. Every 26th of July of the year, the village hosts thousands of pilgrims who come here for reconciliation. When visiting the shrine, there are several religious buildings: - The monastery, built in the seventeenth century by the Carmelite Fathers. - The basilica replaced the chapel in the 19th century. The Scala Sancta "holy stairs" placed at the origin of the chapel. - The Memorial erected in memory of the victims of Bretagne from the first world war. - Space "John Paul II" was created for the visit of the pope in 1996.
